Jojo Rabbit

Written by: Caterina Ferrera

The first film I decided to watch for this blog was Jojo Rabbit which was recommended to me by one of my best friends and was highly critically acclaimed during the awards season this year.

Plot

This movie tells a story of a ten-year old German boy named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who is blinded by his nationalism during the Second World War. All his beliefs are challenged as he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding and helping a Jewish girl, named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), in their house. With no one to tell this massive secret, he relies on his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi) to decide how to handle this situation.

Film Tecniques

Director Taika Waititi took a very big risk by telling such a dramatic and tragic story in a satirical way. However, I believe it paid off for him and he was able to impact his audience in a very profound way.

The most interesting thing to me about this film was the colors and music it used. You would think a movie based on any war would be very glum and the music would have a very tragic tone to it. Instead, every element was very light-hearted allowing events that otherwise would be very shocking to be brushed or laughed off by the audience like it was nothing.

In the end, this helped Waititi emphasize drama only on a few important scenes instead of creating a movie were you were dramatic events became so common they lost all influence.

Review:

Jojo Rabbit is definitely a must watch for everybody. Throughout the movie you'll laugh, you'll cry, but most importantly you will experience hope, which is something we all need today. This film has definitely joined my favorites list, and I know I will never tire of watching it. If you've watched this movie before or if you watch it after reading this, please share your opinions with me. I would love to know what you thought about it!

This film became one of my all-time favorites after a single watch! Waititi was so hilarious my belly was practically hurting the entire film.
