Hello and welcome back to our weekly blog! Today we are going to talk about 2 amazing movies from the last 12 months that you have probably watched because of the beautiful and touching stories. But if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?
1917 (2019)
Directed by filmmaker Sam Mendes and released on December 4, 2019. This movie is about two British soldiers whom, during World War I, must cross over into enemy territory to deliver an important message. So important that it could save 1,600 soldiers. It has a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDB and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But what is so amazing about this movie and why did it have 10 Oscar nominees?!
Well besides the powerful and touching story, and the amazing performances. The film technique used is what makes it so important. It was made so it looked like one long continuos take. We have seen this technique in other classic movies like Rope (1948) directed by Alfred Hitchcock and Birdman (2014) directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
With the constant action and change of terrain, 1917 takes this technique to another level.
HoneyBoy (2019)
HoneyBoy is a movie of the terrible relationship between Otis (Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges), a 12 year old who becomes and movie actor and his father James Lort (Shia LaBeouf), a violent and alcoholic man. The story starts with Otis as a grown up, being diagnosed with PSTD. The movie goes back and forth between two timelines when he starts remembering his childhood.
Cinematographer Natasha Braier, pictured the beauty of Los Angeles through sunsets and orange golden-deep colors. The script was wrote by Shia LaBeouf based on his own childhood. He portraits his feelings and childhood memories in the essence of his father. LaBeouf was also diagnosed with PTSD and has been struggling with addictions. By playing the role of his father in the movie is like a healing process for him. What makes "Honey Boy" special is not just the humor and amazing performances but the fact that is based on the actor's life. It's a heart touching story to see what his relationship with his father was and also what child actors sometimes go trough.
