Hello everyone! This week I want to talk about someone important in the film world that I look up to. If you've read the title you know I'm talking about Steven Spielberg, someone you've probably heard of by now.
If you don't know who he is, Steven Allan Spielberg is a three-time Academy Award Winner director, producer, and screenwriter. He has directed some of the most renowned movies of all times including Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Saving Private Ryan among many others.
When choosing who to write about for this week's blog post, he was the first person that came to mind, after all many of his films were a great part of my childhood. I have to admit however, I knew nothing about his life. So naturally before writing this post, I decided to do my research, and he became even more admirable to me.
I'll tell his story briefly but you can read more about it if you wish. Spielberg struggled with dyslexia and showed very little interest in his studies as a young child. He was a dreamer and started making films with his family's home movie camera.
At the age of sixteen his dad rented a local movie theater to show Spielberg's sci-fi film titled Firelight which made back the $500 it cost to produce overnight.
Still, his poor grades in high school caused his rejection from the best two film schools, UCLA and USC. He attended California State College at Long Beach but dropped out on his last year and continued to pursue his love for movies. He was rejected by many film producers until his film Amblin' earned him recognition and a seven-year contract with Universal Studios.
When speaking of his work once, Spielberg said "whether in success or in failure, I'm proud of every single movie I've directed". His perspective on failure seemed very interesting to me and makes me believe his attitude is what has gotten him as far as he has come today. Despite every mistake he made or every movie of his that has 'flopped', he has remained confident because he trusts himself and he knows what he's doing.
This is something we should all be able to do. If you have a vision work on it and allow yourself to learn from whatever mistakes you make. As long as your purpose is strong and you keep trying you are bound to reach your goal someday.
Thank you for reading this blog post! Remember feedback is always very helpful, feel free to comment your opinions whenever you'd like. You can also let me know what your favorite film directed by Steven Spielberg if you'd like. :)
